Spring Cleaning Tips: How to Organize Your Walk-In Closet
Organizing Your Closet in 6 Easy Steps
The best walk-in closet designs throughout Phoenix blend functionality, beauty, and flawless organization. A semi-annual cleaning and assessment of your wardrobe is an essential step to take when working towards the perfect closet. Arizona Garage & Closet Design has these six steps you can take to clean and organize your walk-in closet.
Evaluate Your Clothing
The first step to take when organizing your walk-in closet in Arizona is to take everything out. Once everything has been removed, ask yourself these series of questions for every garment:
- Does it fit? If not, is it worth getting the piece of clothing altered?
- Have you worn it in the last year? How often do you really wear it?
(A good way to assess whether you really use something is to turn all of your hangers with the hooks facing you. Every time the clothes are worn, turn the hanger the other way. After a couple of weeks, you should have a good idea of what gets worn and what should be cleaned out.) - Would you wear it today?
- If you saw it in a store, would you buy it today?
- Do you absolutely love the way that it looks on you?
- Is it damaged or worn-out? Are there any stains, rips, or tears?
Use the KCDT System
The answers to these questions assist you in sorting the clothes using the KCDT system:
Keep the clothes that fit you, you wear on a regular basis or are extremely sentimental, such as a wedding dress, old athletic uniform, etc.
Consign any clothes that are still in good condition, are lightly worn and were expensive in order to recoup some of the cost of what you paid for them.
Donate clothes are still in good condition but cannot be sold.
Trash clothes that are torn, broken, discolored, bleached or are undergarments. A small portion of these clothes may be candidates for upcycling.

Hang It Up
Arizona walk-in closet organizers agree on one thing across the board: the clothes that you can easily see and access are the clothes that will be worn more often. How many times have you forgotten you owned an article of clothing because it was shoved into the back of a drawer, or squished in among other clothes? Utilize slim hangers to free up more space in the closet and avoid overstuffing.
Organize and Categorize
Once all of the clothing in the “keep” pile has been returned to hangers, it is time to figure out where the clothes will go. The best closet ideas in Phoenix utilize a system of categorization and organization. We suggest categorizing clothes by where they will be worn: work, gym, dates, casual, formal, etc. Within these categories, organize the individual pieces of clothing by garment type: t-shirts, slacks, jeans, blouses, dresses, suits, shorts, jackets, etc.
Fold Sweaters
Walk-in closet designs in Phoenix can incorporate a variety of features, including poles for short hanging or long hanging, ironing boards, islands, slide-out baskets, vanities, and more. One trick of clothing storage is to fold sweaters instead of hanging them. Because sweaters are usually made of heavier material, they can lose their shape if they are hung. Try using see-through or wire baskets so that you can still view the contents within, or placing the folded sweaters on a shelf. Once again, the more visible a piece of clothing is, the more likely it will be worn.
Divide and Conquer
Drawer dividers are an excellent way to maximize the space in your drawers. From underwear to socks and jewelry to makeup, almost any drawer can benefit from the addition of inexpensive and easy-to-use drawer divider. Ties and belts can even be rolled up and stored in divided drawers for reduced wrinkling and easy access.
Shelf dividers are a closet designer’s friend, allowing different types of items to sit on the same shelf in a neat way. Store scarves, purses, sweaters and more without worrying about how they will stand up or wondering if they will fall over. Over-the-door organizers can be used for many different applications including shoe organization, hair accessories, socks, and belts.
